“I am for doing good to the poor, but...I think the best way of doing good to the poor, is not making them easy in poverty, but leading or driving them out of it. I observed...that the more public provisions were made for the poor, the less they provided for themselves, and of course became poorer. And, on the contrary, the less was done for them, the more they did for themselves, and became richer.”
Benjamin Franklin
Don't forget...most liberal posters consider themselves smarter than ol' Ben...or have no idea who the heck he is. From that quote, they probably think he is Romney's running mate.
That should tell you that your minimum wage is way too low.
This idea that keeping wages low make America "more competitive" with third world nations..who wants to compete with the third world anyway? Not the average person- just greedy corporations want this competition.
The myth that keeping wages low help stimulate the economy by keeping small business afloat....if you can not afford to run a small business and pay people a living wage then all you are is just a little tiny greedy corporation..
Of course minimum wage is to low...If you can't live on it- then it is not a wage- it's like being a slave paid in bread and onions.
No, that should tell you that your entitlement programs will NEVER get people back to work.
Entitlement programs should not offer more than what working for a living provide.
The average minimum wage is $7.25, and only applies to businesses that gross at least $500,000...That amounts to less than $1,200 per month, and I'm being very generous.....Cash allowance benefits for financial assistance will also be state regulated and allowances paid will also vary based on different criteria. However, an average expectation can be placed on a family of 4 receiving up to $900 for their TANF allowance. A single person household can expect an average of up to $300. US Welfare System - Help for US Citizens Could you live on that?
No, it's to create industry for which has good paying jobs, and it's to figure out how to train people for those jobs. But, considering the way things are going, wages will continue to slide. After all, an American in the 1970's worked fewer hours for more money, so we're on the wrong track.

Minimum wage in Texas is 7.25 an hour. That's 15,000 dollars a year. You live in Texas - why don't you work out how a single person (let alone someone with a kid) can live on that?
Food, clothing, shelter, transportation, utilities, health care, household items, etc... I'm willing to bet it sucks. Indeed, considering that Texas has a higher poverty rate than California, it would seem that lower cost of living isn't helping a whole lot.
the only people who should be working minimum wage jobs are people who have other means of support (college kids, teens living at home, and... well, that's about it).
Then why have 19.6% of welfare recipients been on it for over 5 years?
Since your source states that 19.6% have received Aid To Dependent Children (AFDC) for more than five years, would it be rude of me to point out that AFDC was repealed in 1996 and replaced by Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF)?
AFDC had no time limit on benefits, TANF limits benefits to 5 years in a lifetime.
Then why do countries with higher minimum wages have healthier economies, less unemployment and far fewer people on welfare? What is your solution?
