And there was no law preventing black people from marrying other black people. They were equal. Whites and Blacks could equally only marry someone of the same race. 96% of Americans agreed with that position.
The Supreme Court still said it's wrong and Unconstitutional.
This, gays can marry the opposite sex argument is just as patently stupid, and is only presented by people completely oblivious to how the law works.

The percentage is probably not that different at least for men. The difference is that 50-60 years ago far fewer would have admitted that they had homosexual relations. You are aware that San Francisco became a gay center because of World War 2? Servicemen bound for the Pacific who had desires unacceptable to American society at that time felt they'd live out those desires before they were shipped out to war given the high chances of being killed by Japanese shells, artillery, etc. Not to mention that there are same sex relations in military, prison, frontier, etc. situations and always have been...

For a homosexual the person whom they want to marry is of the same gender. The government is telling them they cannot marry each other; they must marry someone of a different gender. Obviously they're not going to marry because they're not attracted to the opposite sex. Essentially shutting them out of the process.
Opposing equal marriage rights for gays is regressive views. Saying that "gays have the right to marry only if it's to someone they don't love"? How do you articulate such stupidity?
And I'd say you're too stupid to recognize that's not what they want. Clearly you are (or at least you want to believe you are) heterosexual. What if you were forced to marry someone of your own gender? Would that be a good thing for you?

The same argument can be made to people who are attracted to and only love children. Thankfully our law prevents those individuals from marrying individuals who have not attained a certain age. You apparently have a problem with reasonable social controls - the fact is that anyone can marry if they wish to - stating that they are being forced to marry someone is simply a lie.

Well in the past esp in the era where homosexual relations were illegal it was still common and I even worked collecting old criminal records that dated in the mid 19th century and it was not unusual to see records of men being arrested for homosexual offences. There are gay beats in the area where I have lived that has existed for over an hundred years and still running. But of course homosexuals would not come out of the closet when homosexual relations were illegal.
Yet in the past most homosexuals married yet their marriage was largely an sham and they lived an double life. Many would not admit to themselves as homosexuals even though they had gay relationships. This pattern is still seen today mostly in countries where homosexuality is illegal as well as from many religious families in the western world. Infact I know an friend who lives in an country where homosexuality is illegal and has admitted having homosexual relationships but refuses to label himself as gay.
