Whether you liked him or not, you have to agree that this speech is epic. A lot of what he is saying is our problem today.

Carter was berated for essentially talking to the American people honestly about their problems and treating them as adults instead of cheerleading. The American public do not want to be treated as adults. They want a cheerleader president not someone who respects their intelligence.

The British reaction to David Cameron's "our best days are behind us" speech is similar to the US reaction to Carter's "malaise" speech, so Americans aren't alone in liking for their leaders to treat them like little kids, and being angry when their leaders talk to them honestly

Looks like Carter wasn't that big on football.

Pacifist!

The bearer of bad news is always the punching bag. Sometimes the truth hurts and can be a hard pill to swallow

only a liberal looks at that speech as anything other than an idiot with no clue what to do about the natural results of idiotic progressive politics.

Thank God for Ronald Reagan.

Jimmy Carter is widely considered to one of the most intelligent Presidents that we have ever had. I have to question the intelligence of anyone who would call him an idiot. You may disagree with his political stance on issues, but there is little question among most people in the know that he is a very bright man.

I want to thank him for making abundantly clear his incompetence to hold the job of President, for the sake of anyone who wasn't really sure at the time he made that speech.

Well, you are right to a certain extent. Jimmy Carter attended the Naval Academy so he was certainly well educated. He served with distinction in the Navy and was, according to reports, energetic, studious, and eager to learn. He certainly does not qualify as an "idiot" and he was and is, by and large, a good man.

That did not stop him from being a lackluster President. I would chalk it up to indecisiveness, but I suppose there are other reasons.

Look, neither every liberal Democrat nor every conservative Republican is going to make a good President. Life does not work that way. I do not understand why some feel its necessary to keep going back to Carter and trying to rewrite history. It just did not work out for him. Let it go.

He served his term and the public simply felt someone else would be better. That is Democracy. Carter tried his best and was for the most part honest and honorable. For that he earned our respect, but not our veneration.
