The government, like human beings, learns from its mistakes. Under Bush, I'm sure several statements were cleaned up for accuracy. After his innumerable gaffes, I would trust that this type of revision is pretty routine. Is there something sinister here? I think not. I always thought Lincoln was the first Republican president so perhaps that was what he meant to say.
If on the other hand, one or more of the government's tentacles cleaned up the truth (rather than a mistake) instead, altering it to be deliberately false, THEN we should be complaining...
One doesn't "clean up" a transcript.
You clean up your speech BEFORE you give it, especially when you are the President of the US and have the best and brightest speech writers at your disposal.

Can you believe this is the lame excuse given?
You are right - transcripts ARE NOT cleaned up - they are supposed to be exactly what was said.
Isnt the "American Thinker" one of those satire websites where they just make up stories for entertainment purposes?..
I see that at least one lefty has accepted the story as told by PBS. Did you by any chance not listen to the speech that night. I did and I heard those words that are talked about in American Spectator. I should feel sorry for you but I just can't do it.
I was completed a while back, else why would so many have voted for Obama or Bush?
I had to vote for Bush both times because of what was offered up against him. I promised myself that if the Dems offered any more socialists after they nominated McGovern I would vote for anyone else. I haven't seen one offering by them that wasn't a socialist since that year, 1972.
The warmer came close to winning because so many people thought Clinton was so good. BTW, I didn't vote for Clinton for the same reason as I skipped the rest. Now Jon Carry was too far left leaning and had lied so many times about Vietnam so I just had to go Bush.
