There are victims of drunken driving. And, according to one Montana legislator, there are victims of drunken driving laws.

While speaking out against a proposed bill that would make DUI laws more strict for repeat offenders, state Rep. Alan Hale, R–Basin, said drunken driving regulations hurt local businesses and are "destroying a way of life."

Sure .. a casino and a bar on every block .. it's no wonder why drunk driving would be considered a way of life.

Where Everclear can be sold at nearly every bar in the land. If Montana regulated the liquor sales more like other states did, there wouldn't be such a great need to get super tough on drunk driving.

Still though .. I'd like to see some stiffer fines and jail time overall. But not to the extremes like the police state of Texas, who's drunk driving laws are mere legislated prohibition.

I'm just surprised it wasn't a Louisiana politician saying this. Here in Louisiana, drive thru daquiri huts are legal.

Just another example of government interfering in the lives of people.
All Americans, everywhere should be able to drink as much as they want and be allowed to drive in whatever condition they are.
Get big government out of people's lives!

I had this brilliant idea.

Free cab rides for intoxicated people. You're going home, you blow high, you get a cab ride (or ride in a short bus) for multiple people. The way of paying for it? A tax on alcohol.

People will inevitably drink, and if there is no alternative, they will drink and drive. Who is going to pay for it? Are the taxpayers going to pay a lot via incarceration and court fees etc. A little via the cost of a basic bus system? Or are we going to make random victims pay? Perhaps a better idea may be putting drunk drivers on probation in which they have to spend 8 hours a week driving for that system, and before and after each shift they must blow 0. Theres the free labor. All the taxpayers would be out is a little bit of gas. A lot cheaper then the high penalty legal system, right?

I have seen many larger college towns incorporate some sort of system like that, in some cases it may be volunteer, I'm betting it cuts down on the number of arrests, why not incorporate it nationwide?

Thirty years ago, I almost established, here in Montana, a drive-up Gyro joint where one beer could be purchased for each Gyro purchased.

Lot of red tape and legislative work needed, so I dropped the idea.

Prior to that, I had been in Athens and walked into a fast food joint - walking out with a beer and a Gyro with a skiff of mustard. The whole rest of the day went really well.

Why does anyone knowing they have to drive drink alcohol in the first place?
If people were not so irresponsible and stupid, there would not be such laws...

Well, here in Montana it is believed that if you're driving drunk enough, you won't be capable of texting while driving.
