Please follow the link to my recent blog post about these two beautiful, abandoned buildings, which are located in prime neighborhoods. You can see the pictures I took of these buildings today.

The Lamar Building in Oakland has been demolished. Bulldozers are on the site as of today and the building is rubble.

Thankfully, we have a new, vinyl-sided apartment building across the street that looks like a suburban Microtell Inn.

That's a shame. I always liked that building. I thought they were going to renovate it.

I'm a big fan of that new apartment building. Really like the way they wedged such a dense development onto an awkward site. Some of the exterior materials might not be the greatest.

Interesting article about the tensions between renovation of historic properties and demolition. By all accounts there are well intentioned, historically-minded people on both sides of this one and everybody acknowledges the conundrum. What's best for Deutchtown?

Oh wow... those houses are incredibly ugly and are a blight on my neighborhood.

It's hard to see how it would be economically feasible for anyone to attempt a restoration of those structures. If not demolished, they would likely just hang on there blighting everything nearby.

IIRC, October Development is planning on redeveloping almost an entire block of Suismon (southern side of 700 block, except for the two buildings at the corners). There's currently three empty parcels, but also three frame duplexes, and two old storefronts. From what I've seen of their plan, they want to replace them with seven, faux-historic looking rowhouses which will be 19 feet wide, although this might have been sidelined, since the plan is now three years old.

October Development's infill in Deutschtown is wonderful... many of their houses blend into the streetscapes seamlessly.

I also want to add that Lamar is a billboard company and they do not care about aesthetics. I absolutely hate billboards.
