Just as with the economy, the learning curve does have its ups and downs but should go mostly up if you stick with the same camera long enough. With me, though, it does have its downs, mostly caused by having a 60-year-old short term memory and from not going out and shooting often enough.
Re the shutter timer, all you need to do is remember that it's the toggle at the bottom of the big dial. It has icons both for continuous shooting and a timer. Once you get the hang of using it, it will stick with you. And when you see how much improved some of your photos are by using it, you WILL remember how to get to it quickly. Trust me on this.
