Lately, I've been noticing a lot of decrepit silos and barns in my area. A few weeks ago, I posted in a different thread a photo of a silo with a tree growing out of its top. Below are a few photos I took this afternoon.

Is that a recent pic of that school madcapmagishion? I MIGHT be going to Florida the end of this month and I'd love to get inside that place and get some shots!

You are looking at "abandoned homes" for many thousands of years; The Inupiaq People lived in sod houses - whale bones covered with sod!

This unit once had electricity running to it, as witnessed by the porclean insulator at the top of the stick.

Some of these old sod houses were very large inside, with other rooms off to either side. You are seeing bones that have been exposed because of soil blowing away exposing them. They are all over the place in Point Hope.

Very interesting, SityData! My grandfather grew up in a sod house on the plains of Nebraska back in the early 1900s. Didn't know they ever made them out of whale bones! Probably not any of those lying around Nebraska, but maybe a few dinosaur or mammoth bones. Who knows?

wow...thanks for the history. now that I see your other photo's of the sod whale bone houses it makes sense....seeing the building scale next to the whale bones is what threw me as it appears to low for being a structure for a shelter. next question...the photo with the raise mounds of earth...is that natural or man made soil placement?
when you see this in Europe such as Sweden it is a usually a Viking burial ground manmade area.

The mounds were covered with sod when the houses (igluk) were originally constructed.
Iglu = 1
Iglut = 2
Igluk = 3 or more.

Here we see erosion of the top soil taking place over a very long period of time.
