I grew up in a once-beautiful city which began to head downhill in the late 1960s. Political corruption, gangs, white flight and decline of the local steel mills all contributed to the city's current state of despair and disrepair. Dilapidated, burned-out and abandoned buildings are nearly everywhere. I moved away from the city in 1976 and never thought I'd go back. However, nearly 6 years ago I took a job in the city and have been working there ever since. Here are a couple of photos of the abandoned buildings I pass every day during my commute to and from work. It's a heartbreaker.
It's not very safe to get out of the car to take photos, so I took these from my car window when I was stopped in construction traffic. There are hundreds of similar sights in the formerly bustling downtown area.

Abandoned pool deck on Treasure Island Naval Station in San Francisco, CA. Before I was born, when my dad was stationed here, he would swim in this pool for his PT.
I have hundreds more from this trip; I used to live on TI, before they started re-using the different buildings on it. There was something surreal about it; having grown up in a military family and lived in Stokes housing in the past, being exposed to the regulations and standards, seeing this manmade island being slowly reclaimed by nature in many places, and the infrastructure of the mightiest blue-water navy in the history of the world crumbling and corroding away is quite sad... even if, ultimately, it's a result of the world being a safer place.
