A lot of times I've noticed that we all tend to call into the digital SLR geek speak, so I thought I'd start up a thread in here to let folks know that not everyone who gets into photography walks around with ten pounds or more of cameras and lenses around their neck all the time. Sometimes you can take great shots with point-and-shoot models too (and save your neck).
Example: I wanted to go for a walk today, but with some current leg issues I've got going on, carrying "gear" would only add weight and hurt as I walked, so, I decided to take my new Canon G10 instead of anything elaborate. Ok, so if I wanted to make a 30 x 40 print of anything I took today, I'd probably be SOL, but some of the shots turned out better than I thought. I'm headed to Costco tomorrow to get a few 11x14 prints made of a few of them to see how well they turn out at that reasonable size.
Here's one from today. This is at Sweetwater Creek State Park here in Georgia, which is around 20 miles or so West of the city, just south of I-20. A neat place with a large lake and a large creek that runs a few miles, with walking trails and old mill ruins along the way (my leg didn't allow me to make it as far as the ruins, so sorry, no pics of that)....
(image compressed for file size issues, so some loss of detail due to that)

Up until last month, all my photos on here were from either a Fujifilms E900 or a Canon A640 point and shoots. I love my new Canon 40D! I still use my Fuji, though. I took it with me on my little vacation I'm on now.
Ha! All of my photos are point and shoot from a Canon 5S IS. I have a Canon D10 that I leave in the closet most of the time as it's too heavy to carry around with the flash attachment, etc. I think I need a photo assistant (aka grandchildren when they get bigger).
I really like the first one, Bulldawgfan, though it is interesting to see that truck that looks about the size of a small ant.
Yea, I like the first one better too. I took it in color, but as you can tell from the second picture all I had was shades of gray... so I pushed the saturation slider thingy all the way to the left and made it a black and white shot. For that shot I think it works better in black and white.
As I take more and more pictures I find this to be true... good pictures do not need to be taken with expensive and fancy equipment. Oh, sure, I love my big macro lens and my far reaching ones, but nothing makes up for the 'right place, right time' shot.
I also find this to be true... before I carried a camera with me where ever I went I used to say "Man I wish I had my camera" a lot. Now not so much. For that reason... as silly as this sounds... I do not go out to take pictures anymore. I just go out and bring my camera along with me. I know, that sounds silly... but hey, my best shots seem to come from places you would not normally think of. The parking lot of a barracks on Ft. Benning? Does not sound too picturesque to me... but I caught a hawk stalking a dove between the painted lines of that very parking lot. And driving down the country back roads of central Georgia I had no idea that I was about to happen upon a great big black bull standing in a field of yellow flowers.
So, in my opinion, 'right place, right time' pretty much trumps fancy equipment.
Nice pics for point and shoot! I have a Canon A630. Anyone know how to shoot in B&W? I cannot figure it out. I transferred some of my pics to a program I have to change them to B&W in there but they have a slight pinkish hint to them when I print them out. Not pure B&W. I read my manual and do not see a mode for it. Also how many pixels do I need to blow up a pic to poster size? I am thinking about going up to 12 mps on a new camera.
Good one, Skyliner! That would have been a candidate for the Reflections category.
