We're not real fans of HOA's. Sure, they may keep neighborhood's looking nice, but they also have their down sides.

We've been toying with the idea of moving to the Phoenix area and some friends that already live there have suggested 3 areas to check out: Gilbert, Queen Creek and Chandler.

We've been looking around in the Queen Creek area online and we're planning a trip out that way to have a look-see for ourselves.

Just wondering if there are any areas that don't have an HOA.

And, heck, while I'm at it... are there possibly any "planned communities" where the houses are on like an acre each?

And should I keep looking at the Gilbert/ Chandler areas or is Queen Creek equal to those areas so it doesn't really matter?

Queen Creek is way further out, if you need to go into Phx regularly, it's a drive. You are more likely to find larger lots out there and fewer HOA's, but not necessarily "planned communities" with lots that size.

You can find properties with an acre or so in Gilbert or Chandler. Mamy, if not most, of those will be in older neighborhoods without HOAs.

I think it is really important to know more about where you will work, go to church, have friends and what type of activities you enjoy (sports, shopping, dining, nightlife, etc) before you pick an area.

Queen Creek, East Chandler, E Gilbert are nice areas, but they are very far from the city. The commute will wear you out and there is little public transportation, very far from airport.

Do a little research on travel times to places you might frequent. Don't forget the mileage commuting 40 miles a day gets mighty expensive. You could put the extra $100-150 a month into your mortgage instead of your gas tank.

Any planned community will have an HOA to enforce the architectural theme of the area. Older homes will tend to have the larger lots as well as the non HOA criteria. Whats your price range anyway?
