This is an invitation to dispel the notion that when kids are out of school, the summer months, they can't enjoy it because it is too hot - they don't want to go outside. Has this been the case with kids in your house or that you know?. Are kids outside playing or engaged in sports or other activities in July and August? I have a twelve year old who has been living at 8600 ft. in Colorado and hope he would do well in Mesa. Look forward to your responses. Thanks.

My kids are/were natives, they don't care about the heat. In fact, they tend to stay in more when it's cold in winter. Kids adapt. It's probably the computer that keeps them in more than heat or cold would. Me, too.

I'd second that. The computer is our down fall! When it's really hot they can only take 15 or 20 min. in the heat. They just end up going swimming. I do wish they would change our school schedule to fit the weather though, why do we have a schedule made up for the east coast? We should be going to school all summer and taking a 3 month break in the winter. Then our kids might learn something. They would be more likely to do there homework when it was too hot to go outside. Right now when it's nice they certainly don't want to stay inside. I am convinced this is why all the good colleges are located where it's cold. lol Last time I checked, kids didn't need a break to harvest crops anymore.

The kids adapt and do well. When they are new here, they do need to learn to drink a lot of water when they do their outside activities so they keep hydrated.

During the very hot periods parents keep the smaller children in, and take them to the pools. They will swim a lot then. In our cul-de-sac the small neighborhood children like to play in the street because of the extra room they have, and very little traffic. But when it gets to 110 the asphalt gets very hot so it's not comfortable to play there.

Kids adapt faster than adults, so I would not worry about.

The only thing that kept my kids inside any time of year was the computer and TV. Still they spent most of their time playing outside year round. They were either at the park playing baseball/softball/kickball/football, riding bikes and roller blading, or they were in the pool. The only weather that curtailed outdoor activities to any degree was rain. (Then it was me dragging them inside so we didnt have a house covered in mud.) Today, I think the biggest obstacle to kids playing outside in the summer is their PARENTS, who worry, sometimes to the point of paranoia, about skin cancer. Like everyone is saying, kids adapt. I never had to force them to go outside and play, nor did they ever whine about it being "too hot"

I'll say it again. My kids just don't care. They are out in the cul-de-sac riding on scooters and bike in the heat of the day, in the pool, at the park along with all the other kids who were born here. They come in and out and get water with these bright red faces, but they keep on going.

My wife moved here as an infant and says she never was in the house in the summer.
