What are "valid" (even though validity is subjective) reasons for not wanting children?
I will admit that I detest children. Frankly, anybody under the mid-20s I seem to hold an innate dislike towards. I feel for this reason, I'm scared I may even abuse any children I ever have. So for this reason, I don't want any children.
ukmanformumbaifem, if ever there is a good reason not to want kids, yours IS, it's good that you know that about yourself, and that's all that matters...Having children is a personal decision, just as not having them is.... one is not better than the other

Before I had kids it drove me crazy that people seemed to think I was doing something wrong by not having any. I even remember being called selfish. People would ask all the time when I was going to have children, and if not, then why. It would really put me on the defensive. I used to tell the truth - that I just didn't like kids and didn't want to be a parent - but that seemed to make people angry. Not long ago I was with some friends, and everyone had children but one. Someone else started going on and on about how she just had to have kids, and when she was done the other woman looked at her and told her that she'd already spend years going through expensive fertility treatments and the doctors now agree that she simply cannot ever have children. That shut the other woman up pretty fast.
So I can think of several reasons that might at least shut people up - you can't have children is one, you have birth defects in your family and don't want to risk it is another.
Not that you need any reason at all - but I get that a person might feel they do.
No it is selfish to have children that you do not REALLY want to meet some societal expectation.
