I got whooped with my dad's belt when I was a kid, but ONLY when I did something real bad. I've never used the belt on my own kids but swatted their fanny (with my hand) a couple times. I didn't turn out to be an abusive father. I never thought my own father abusive, but he was strict at times.
Is spanking with a belt discipline? Or abuse?
I was spanked with a belt. 3 swats maximum. The hits were never in the heat of the moment, I was sent to my room first for about 15 minutes to think about what I had done and for mom or dad to cool down before giving out the punishment. I am proud to say that I am a kind and caring person who considers consequences before actions . My parents spanked with a belt, I was not abused.I was not "whooped", I did not have my "ass beat", as some people like to call it.
Abuse. People who regularly use corporal punishment to correct their children are abusers. And a belt is waaaay over the top. What if you can't find your belt? Will an extension cord do?
(2) It teaches your child that violence is acceptable. It teaches them that it's okay to do it to their kids. Violence is never acceptable. It may be a necessity to defend yourself but it's never acceptable to strike your kids.
(3) It makes your child weak. Yes, you might keep your kid in line, but you remove his or her confidence and break them down. Sometimes, a little defiance isn't the worst thing. The most successful people in this country are confident and cocky. You don't want to take away your child's confidence and edge.
(4) You can still intimidate without resorting to violence and being abusive.
