In this day and age?

Quote:
Spanking in school may seem like a relic of the past.

But in Florida, students from pre-schoolers to high school seniors are still being paddled by teachers and principals.

In parts of the state, mostly in the rural north, getting spanked at school, on your butt, with a wooden or fiber-glass board, is just part of being a misbehaving student.

“I been getting them since about first grade,” said Lucas Mixon, now a junior at Holmes County High School in Bonifay, Fla.

“It’s just regular. They tell you to put your hands up on the desk and how many swats you’re going to get.”

Florida is one of 19 states that still allow public schools to paddle, according to the Center for Effective Discipline.

I think it's kinda icky to have a high school student bending over a desk. It smacks of well, I don't know but I sure wouldn't be doing it if I were a teacher.

But then again, I don't believe in paddling at school.

I grew up in the deep South where kids were bent over a desk and paddled for any stupid infraction. And the schools were TERRIBLE. Fights all the time - something just wasn't working.

I was so glad when we moved!

I was paddled in a central Florida elementary school for kissing Bobby Armstrong on the school bus when I was in fifth grade.

At the same school, in phys ed, we would be lined up touching our toes and the teacher went behind us and paddled those that could not bend all the way down to touch their toes. That was decades ago and I can still bend at the waist and place my hands, palms down, on the ground. I couldn't stand to be paddled....

It's sick that in this day and age, paddling is allowed. But this is Florida. We're still backward like that in some counties.

In NC my school practiced corporal punishment. You could opt out though, my mom did. She told them if they wanted to paddle me, to call her and she would handle it. Can you opt out in Fl?

I'm guessing 18 year students would be exempt since the person with the paddle could face being charged with assault or given a beat-down.

I turned 18 a week or so into my senior year, if anyone had tried to paddle me, there would have been hell to pay.

The article says parents can't opt out. One mother objected when she found welts on her 5 year old from an in-school spanking and was told there was nothing she could do about it.

Apparently so.
I don't see how people just allow this. Especially the students, if anyone tried to hit me I wouldn't allow it.

If my preschooler came home with welts inflicted by an adult, we'd be at the police station filing charges.
