I know how to swim & love swimming. Heck I'm even looking into learning how to dive. Now my mom can't swim & never could. She swore if she ever had kids that they would know how to swim. So my brother took lessons & then so did I. My brother likes occassionally playing in the water (and he's 38) whereas I go as much as I can in the summer (I am 28). My friend's grandparents have a pool that I've been swimming in ever since they got it. I even go while they're not home (I call them 1st to ok it with them) by myself.
I'm not sure I agree with making it a requirement in school though. When I was 5 I had to give up my swimming lessons because of my ears. I had to wear ear plugs just to wash my hair, so swimming was defiently out. I didn't swim again for about 5 years. Sure I played in the water but not actually swimming & I couldn't get my ears wet. Even today soemtimes when I get too much water in my ears they hurt like hades.
I know it's a great skill to have. But I'm not sure that it should be forced on everyone. Not everyone is cut out to know how to swim. I also believe that people should use more common sense. If you can't swim then don't get in the water without someone who can.
I was at a BBQ at my friends grandparents house & there were about 15 kids out in the pool. The youngest was about 5 at the time & maybe 5 weren't that great of swimmers. I was outside with about 4 other adults when 1 mentioned that they couldn't swim. Turns out I was the only one out there watching the kids who could swim!!!! Seriously? You're watching kids swim when you yourself can't swim? Needless to say I hung around just in case I was needed until another adult who could swim came out to watch them.
I learned to swim when I was 11, right after we moved to Aruba. Before that I couldn't swim although I always loved playing in the water. Once in Aruba I took to the water like a duck and was able to stay afloat very quickly. From that point on I quickly became an excellent swimmer. When in college I even had a summer job in a water show at Aquarena Springs in San Marcos TX.
I think ALL children should have swimming lessons, even if they hate them, so they can at least stay afloat should they find themselves--for whatever reason--in deep water.
