Let's see who can be the first to find a product in the grocery store with a best by date of exactly 12-21-2012. The day the universe will come to an end, according to the Mayan calendar. There might be some out there already, like Twinkies. But I can't find anything that is dated more than two years. How can salt have a best-by date---it's already a billion years old.
You can certainly eat most foods beyond any "convenience date". If the date is explicitly an "expiration date" then proceed with caution. For an example, a steak a few days past a sell by date is probably not going to hurt you. A box of crackers 2 months past a best by or use by date are typically just fine. Smell the food, does it smell OK? If it smells spoiled or rancid, toss it out.

That's my sister's birthday so I've been using that line on her for years - that and, taunting her for being born on the darkest day of the year (winter solstice - shortest daytime)

Hey that's my brother's b'day too! Let the taunting begin!

12 hr rule
I always have Mrs AksarbeN check the food out first, smelling, tasting, etc. then wait 12 hours to see if there’s any effect on her. If nothing, then I’ll try eating it myself.
lol
