Our family is moving to NE Ohio from WNY. We love WNY but......

Job: Our income will be 30% higher in Ohio
Weather: Tie, WNY is just as bad
Property Taxes: Property tax about 40% lower on equivalent home in OH
Income tax: Tie, NY 6.85% on income over 20K but no city income tax
Sales Tax: 8% where I live now vs ~6%
Home Prices: OH about 20% lower for equivalent property/quality in WNY
Schools: NY has some really good school districts, so does OH.

So OH is not nirvana by any means but it is not as bad as some would say. We are looking forward to be Ohioans.

Having lived in the Dayton and Cleveland, Ohio areas for a total of eight years, I find the negative perspective of some to be the opposite of mine. The people I knew were intelligent, kind and forward thinking.

Generally speaking we usually find what we look for - intelligent, ignorant, beautiful, ugly or whatever. And wherever you live there will be people of every kind. It’s a matter of perspective and focus. Focus on the good and you will tend to attract the good.

The only reason we moved from Ohip is because of my employment which results in occasional relocations. I have traveled extensively throughout the nation and have lived in five states. We have warmer memories of Ohio than any place we have lived.

My wife and children share my love of the people and the state. Ohio is a beautiful land populated with gracious and well rounded individuals.

I'm with you and most but not all of my friends on on the same page: Ohio is a great place to live. Not just good enough, but really a great place.

Here is a nice article I ran across that really gets at the heart of the issue:

Folks

I am BRAND NEW to this site .I am Irish and will be retiring to Ohio with my Cleveland born wife.

Whats a good salary to retire on? That is what's the average after tax salary for folks there. We will be cash buyers for our next home so mortgages are not a consideration.

I am used to paying $8.00 a gallon gas...so thats not going to frighten me.

Any constructive replies please

Thanks

EW
