A laptop and camera were stolen Friday from students living in an off-campus residence in the 400 block of Taylor Ave. police said.

Police arrest Scranton man for alleged assault

SCRANTON A 19-year-old Scranton man was arrested for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend Wednesday morning.

Franklin Winstead of 910 Prescott Ave. was charged with simple assault and harassment. Police say he threw Nicole Johns, 18, of Scranton, to the ground, into a window sill and into an entertainment center Wednesday at about 2:35 a.m.

Ms. Johns suffered cuts above her eye and on her elbow. She was treated at Moses Taylor Hospital, police said. He was arraigned in Magisterial District Judge Alyce Hailstone Farrells court.

Bail was set at $5,000.

In fairness....two of the three incidents you posted were domestic disputes. Not that domestic disputes are good, but they can happen even in the safest towns, and do not pose a threat to people walking down the street.

I'm not pretending this is Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood or anything, but its not Baghdad either. But it will be someday if we don't get Doherty out of there. He's killing public safety and killing this city.

WE all get it, you hate the Admin, you think the City ois going to hell, Crime is awful. We all know where you stand. I am not "playing down" anything. Crime is crime and it isd bad no matter how often it occurs. My point, is that Scranton is a safe place to live.

How is Scranton a safe place to live? Are you not watching the news? It's not safe, the crime rate here is high, i don't see that as safe.

A couple of domestic disputes, a fight, and a theft doesn't exactly make it Detroit, either.

Maybe if he spent the tax money on public safety instead of spending it on self promoting TV ad's featuring himself. Why does Scranton run TV ad's in it's own market anyway? Is he trying to convince Scrantonian's to visit Nay Aug Park? Don't they do this anyway? or convince city residents that Scranton is a great city? It seems like a waste of money, if you are gonna spend money on advertising, wouldn't be better spent in other parts of the state, or New Jersey or New York or something. I don't understand why they are advertising in thier own backyard. People that do visit here, are visiting for the outdoorsy, hiking, and camping aspect of the area anyway. I don't think many people see Scranton or W-B as a tourist destination. I don't see a conversation going like this "Honey, where do you want to vacation this year? Oh I donno we went to Wildwood last year, and Niagra Falls the year before... Ah, I got it! Why don't we go to Scranton! Did you see those wonderful commercials featuring the mayor! I've always wanted to visit a dying, rust belt town that hit it's prime 80 years ago!" Like I said, I just don't get it.

Taxpayer-funded election ads. He has to have his face on everything because he's always trying to run for office. It pi$$es me off everytime I see some publicly-funded ad with his face on it.

Now, now, now. I actually want to vacation in Erie, an even RUSTIER city than Scranton, so don't imply that nobody wants to visit our state's cities. Hell, I can't drive for a minute on Highway 315 without seeing an oncoming car with a different state's license plate adorning its front bumper, and I don't see what the big draw is about Pittston Township other than being a "pit stop" for the Intererstates.

I also want to visit some other "Rust Belt" cities like Rochester, Buffalo, and Cleveland at some point in the future. I visited Binghamton in 2007 for a photo tour and loved my experience, even though Binghamton is still light years behind Scranton in terms of attractiveness and revitalization (although they had a pretty street scape system downtown that Scranton could learn a thing or two from).

You constantly hype up Wilkes-Barre as if it's some sort of thriving metropolis, so why can't Scranton have that same allure to people? Some people like historic homes, old brick buildings, small mom-and-pop restaurants, coal mine tours, iron furnaces, old trains, etc. Coming to Scranton is like stepping 50 years back in time (unfortunately that's the social/political mindset as well, but I digress). When I'm likely working in the BosWash Corridor next year I'll look at my fast-paced life of adjusting my GPS while texting on my phone and commandeering my sedan on a six-lane freeway en route to an audit client and likely miss going to the grocery store and taking twice as long as I should because I know half of the other people shopping there. I'll miss La Festa Italiana, the Wilkes-Barre Farmers' Market, Nay Aug Park (yes, weluvpa, believe it or not I'll miss that place), the coal mine tour, church picnics, and even polka music! LOL!

You all sell Scranton too far short.

How can you say it's a safe place, with the crime rate soaring in recent months. Maybe it was "safer" five years ago, but not now. When was the last time you were actually in the city? Next time you come, you'll notice a difference. And to say Doherty has nothing to do with it and that's he's not a least partially responsible is folly.

To be fair even with the recent crime spree the city is still safe as compared to many cities of comparable size.
