The data superhighway that promised to turn the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre area into Wall Street West will now stop short.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

I knew this proposal was too good to be true. I had envisioned the downtown areas of Scranton and Wilkes-Barre both booming with financial firms about the same time I'd be finishing graduate school and pursuing a promising career within walking distance of my home in the city. It now appears as if I'll have to drive to Easton or East Stroudsburg. Shame on Representative Kanjorski and the others for giving college students myself such false hope for a brighter future in NEPA!

Instead of complaining that this won't be in Scranton or Wilkes Barre, why can't we just be happy that these jobs are going to be in NEPA. Last time I checked, Monroe County and Stroudsburg ARE in Northeast PA.

Yeh and they are close enough to the NJ line that people will be able to easily commute from NJ to the jobs there, so there is no promise that these jobs will be going to people from PA.

Thank you, Dan, for beating me to the reply. People in the Poconos can already easily commute into NJ or even all the way to NYC to snag a great career opportunity, and now people in NJ can commute into Monroe County to work. When will Scranton/Wilkes-Barre receive better-paying career opportunities than call centers, Wal-Mart, distribution centers, etc.? Just look at Monster.com, Careerbuilder.com, or most of those other online job search sites---the opportunities around here are few and far between. Why should residents of one of the largest metropolitan areas in the state be forced to commute 1-2 hours to careers in East Stroudsburg, NJ, or even NYC?

Monroe County/Stroudsburg is not really a reasonable commuting distance from Scranton/W-B. Stroudsburg is more a part of NJ anyway....the Poconos are more and more resembling North Jersey traffic-and-strip-mall hell by the day. I have an idea....lets give the Poconos to New Jersey and PA can have the nice part of Jersey: the south Jersey shore.....most of Cape May County NJ is PA license plates and most of Monroe/Pike Counties is NJ/NY plates, so it would seem logical, right?

Among other things, high corporate income taxes in PA drive out/down job growth. So does our inadequate, underfunded infrastructure.

Actually a good chunk of Sanofi-Pasteur (located in Swiftwater, Monroe County) employees live in the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Metroplex. Another good chunk live in the Lehigh Valley and of course some live in the Poconos and even Jersey.

I wouldn't say Monroe County is not that unreasonable of a commuting distance for Scranton/W-B. Stroudsburg would be a little further away, but still doable if you really wanted to live in those cities and work in Stroudsburg.

When was the last time any of you commuted dailey across 380 from SCranton? That really is not a reasonable commute, summer traffic on the weekends can be brutal and 380 is the aboslute worst road that I have ever had to commute on in the winter months. Its not the distance its the conditions that make it a not reasonable commute. I commuted from SCranton to Old Bridge NJ everyday for close to 12 years+. 380 was the worst part of the 2 1/2 drive in the winter and the 380/80 interchange is a nightmare in the evening with back ups all the way down the hill. You can't really go around because everyone else is and that jams up the back roads. That area sucks no matter which way you slice it. If I did not have to go there I wouldn't, I rathered to take 33 south to 78east and then into NJ. Thank god I don't have to do that anymore.

Such a commute isn't such a big deal. I never cease to be amazed by the way some people seem to think a few miles down the road is an eternity.

I'm a bit surprised at the general consensus that you somehow deserve to have a short commute. YOU choose to live in the area. It's your choice to move closer to an area where the jobs are more concentrated.

This reminds me of the folks that move into Stroudsburg from NYC, and then complain about having to commute to their jobs in the city.
