Not related to this specific job announcement --- but there was another interesting piece in the Triangle Business Journal today regarding an interview with the CEO of Locus Biosciences (Paul Garofolo) and his opinion of the strength of Life Sciences in the Triangle:
“Despite just starting human trials in January, Locus has inked close to $1 billion in the last two years. In early 2019, the company landed a contract with Johnson & Johnson worth up to $818 million to treat bacterial infections. In October it announced a $77 million partnership with the federal government’s Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA). And in November it landed a $12 million deal with a global nonprofit.
Is the Triangle the place to figure all that out?
I’m 100 percent convinced of that. I’ve been an executive in California-based Fortune 500 companies and I’ve been an executive in companies that have also been here in Research Triangle Park. There’s something interesting about RTP for our field that most people don’t see immediately: this is the world headquarters in research for biopharma. All of the major contract research organizations that run clinical trials are here, all the major manufacturing contract outsourcers are here, the talent inside RTP is just phenomenal.”
This is a big deal. John Kane makes stuff happen, and now Raleigh has (for the first time ever) a pro development city council.
There were a lot of past city governments that got stuck in analysis paralysis to the point that they missed their window of opportunity. From an action perspective, these last few years have felt very different from the past 3 decades. The city has gotten to the size where there's pent up demand for its core to grow. I heard (anecdotally) today that the new Line Apartments at Smoky Hollow were renting faster than expected. If true, just expect more to be announced soon in downtown.

Filings with the town call for a 120-room hotel with a total of 78,416 square feet. The project is situated on three acres at 324 Freedom Parkway, north of downtown Pittsboro and Highway 64.

I am upset that Chatham County will lost one of the area's last and largest continuous canopies of trees for more semi-cheapish development like you see everywhere.
When you see old, 1960's run down strip shopping centers, it's unfortunate, but at least they are small and contained.
Everything that looks current new in all of these huge developments will succumb to the same aging processes but on a huge scale.
For timeless beauty we need more all-brick construction and even styling like Colonial Williamsburg which is appropriate for the area.
I don't believe we need to create more and more faux town centers, but rather expand on what's already there.
Final property of the Downtown South project has been purchased. Construction is set to begin next year but the whole project is expected to take 30 years to mature and the stadium depends on a TIF agreement with the city that will be hammered out next year but if that is worked out expect the stadium to start construction in 2022 at the earliest.
Raleigh needs a bowling alley + bar in downtown. Crazy retail rent prices will probably make that impossible.
Maybe a developer will come along and build one as part of an entire entertainment complex, preferably in closer proximity to the convention center if there is available land.
