While the population of the Triad cities are growing it seems that the Triad CMSA has been hovering around 1.6 million for a long time, at least a few decades. That tells me that population growth in Greensboro and Winston-Salem is either due to annexation or people from other parts of the Triad moving in to those cities.

The population numbers that I provided compare apples to apples, and reflect the CSA boundary as it is today.
It's not out of the realm of possibility that Iredell was part of the Triad at some point and then joined Charlotte's (and in 2013 MSA). It seemed like something that could've caused slower growth had that happened.
