Hi. I was hoping to find out from some people-the-know some suggestions for places to live. We have two kids and a small dog, so we're looking for some where with good schools and a decent (1 hour or under) commute to E 42nd Street. A yard would be ideal, but I'm assuming this isn't going to be possible. Any ideas/suggestions would be appreciated. We're moving from LA back to the East Coast.
With you desire to be within an hour or less of NYC, your options are reduced to Westchester (NY), Bergen/Hudson (NJ), or Nassau (NY) counties. You might want to start a thread in the Westchester County forum, but I can tell you that you want to start looking at river towns south of Tarrytown (on Metro North's Hudson Line) and inland towns south of White Plains (on Metro North's Harlem Line). If you want to expand your commute to 1.5 hours or less, I can give you info on Orange / Dutchess / Putnam Counties.
Rockland is a pretty long commute to E 42 st. I would say Nassau Long island is your best best.
I live in Rockville Centre and the LIRR train is 40 minutes to Penn Station.
Someone else mention this with the best commute (being under an hour) being any river town south of Tarrytown on Metro-North Hudson Line or South of White Plains on the Harlem Line or South of Harrison on the NHL Line.
Rockland County, New Jersey and Long Island is too far. All of those places with public transportation go on the west side of Manhattan and you will need to either walk, bus or take the subway crosstown. You would want to be using Metro-North since that goes into Grand Central Terminal, which is right on E 42st.
Location: Prince Georges County, MD (formerly Long Island, NY)

Well in a few years, the LIRR will also be going to GCT. Actually, who am I fooling, at this rate, it should be done in time for my grandkids
