My gf and I are about to graduate college, she lives with her family in Harlem and I dorm in college in Long Island, but lived in South Bx and 145/Edgecombe. We want to get an apartment together but everything we look at needs us to make 30/40X the rent, with good credit, and they don't accept guarantors.

I have always picked up serving jobs in the city, and we both have $6K saved up for first, last, security, and emergency rent money, but its still not good enough!

We looked in the heights, south bronx, harlem, and are beginning to look at Long Island City/Queens and Brooklyn, and almost feels impossible.

What are recent college grads supposed to do?

Appreciate input, thanks!

Most places that I have dealt with will allow you to use a co-signer if the tenant cant meet the income requirements. Keep in mind, the co-signers need to have 80X the monthly rent in verifiable annual income. Other suggestions would be shares on craigslist. NYC is a tough place to get a foothold in. I have always equated it to a rooftop speeding locomotive wild west fight scene. Eventually, after almost falling off the train three times, clinging for life with brusied fingers, and narrowly missing having your legs severed by a signal sign, you manage to pull your adversary off, kick open a window, and slide in. Fortunately, there is usually a waiter ready to take your drink order. ;-) Good luck. One hell of a ride.

The guarantor needs to make 80x the rent.
