I grew up in Astoria....I had a GREAT childhood....and when I cruise through the old neighborhood.... I get a tear in my eye

Also....a movie was made about growing up in Astoria....I actually know a couple of the people the characters were based on...the movie is called A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints.....with Robert Downey Jr.

how is that movie as far as realism? does it portray astoria well/accurately?

i'm from minneapolis, but i'm looking at neighborhoods out there now to move to, and Astoria is one of my top choices.

opinion...where are these "nice places" you speak of? I have yet to find them...and I am in Astoria a lot. I would say it's "ok"...maybe even a little less than that. Nice? IMO, not really.

I see on the map that Astoria is very close to La Guardia. Doesn't the constant air travel bother the people who live there?

The planes don't fly over Astoria. It's East Elmhurst and parts of Jackson Heights that have to deal with it mostly. It's only really bothersome if you're pretty close... but I guess the people who live in those houses knew, and had to deal with that before they moved into their locations.

That movie is set in the early 1980's....and yeah....it catches the "ambiance" of the neighborhood during the early 80's....as far as a nice place to live...it is NOT suburban....it is an inner city neighborhood.....tons of foreigners.....apartment buildings and houses......main shopping strips.....aka Steinway Street.....lots of restauarants and cafes....outdoor cafes in the summer.....feasts....otherwise known as carnivals in other parts of the country.....lol

Right now, alot of yuppies are in Astoria being its close proximity to Manhattan....that being said.....there is also ALOT of overdevelopment and some of the original "personality" of Astoria is gone...

Growing up in Astoria was FUN.....however...as I get older, suburban life is drawing me in....

I lived in Astoria from about 1992 to 2005 and absolutely loved it. It was becoming very hipsterish when I left. Back in the day it was very 'neighborhoody'. It was the best kept secret in NYC. I dream of going back some day, but I'm sure it will be too expensive when I do.
