Just saw "A guide to recognizing your saints," tonight. How was Astoria in the 80's (mid to late to be more specific)? In the movie they make it seem like it was really crappy neighborhood. I'm just curious, since it has much different reputation now.

All I know is that Greeks dominated the neighborhood, and Arabs began to make their presence shown.

I'm more curious as to how rough a neighborhood it was. In the movie, the main characters are a mix of Italian, Irish, and Hispanic kids.

Mostly Greeks and Italians. NYC blue collar mix with immigrants from these countries. "Classic" Queens, really. Not sure when the spanish and Arabs moved in, but it's more recent certainly for the Arabs.

Nope, I'm pretty sure it was the 80s for some of the Arabs, especially the Lebanese fleeing the war.
