Resumes?!!? Retail?!?!?!! CALL CENTERS?!!!? Are you kidding me>!!!!

Go walk into bars and restaurants . Get a waiter or bartending job or some other service job along those lines (maybe some wealthy person's social club needs a lockerroom attendant or something). Make $200 plus/shift and don't pay much taxes. Some will say "but, gee whiz, those jobs are hard to get!!". Sure, but when you do get it, you'll effectively be making more than most college grads with entry-level jobs/salaries. My dude worked at a CRUMMY west village bar as a bottle service waiter and was pulling $500+/night while paying $1,300 for a huge 1BR in Harlem. If he didn't have such a massive coccaine habit, he'd be able to save THOUSands a month. Only in America.

On Edit, it has never ceased to amaze me when some of these manhattan service people let me in on how much they make.

A 17 year old can't work in a bar, can't bartend, can't serve liquor.

About the other things you mentioned (locker room attendant, etc) -- you typically have to "know" someone to get into jobs like that.

This guy (the OP) is looking for a job he can do while still in High School. He needs flexible hours. He needs hours where he'll be home at a decent time so he can attend school and keep his grades up.

The types of jobs you mentioned are great for a person who is in their early 20s or a "struggling actor". They're not good for a 17 year old looking to have a job while still in high school.

Back when I was in H.S...way back then...I worked at the museum. There are plenty in NYC that you can apply to. I volunteered first and eventually they paid me. Its good work experience and probably looks better on your resume then working in fast food. Other people I know worked at the parks and recreation department...I think other city agencies might hire students. It is a really tough job market so good luck. Money would be great but even if you find a volunteer position, take it. It looks good for college, for when you apply to your next job, and you get some experience.

Great ideas!

I would never recommend fast food work to anyone unless they're going directly into management training or have long range plans of being franchise owner. I don't even think fast food would prepare you to work in food service or hospitality --- the food all comes pre-cooked, premeasured, etc and you aren't really getting food service/hospitality experience.

I hope the OP will come back and comment on our posts and let us know how the job search is going!
