Hey everyone!
My friend and I were planning to move to New York for about 6 months to see what it's like. We may even stay longer if we like it! We're from California, so we don't know exactly what area is the best place to live there. We're college students, so we don't mind a small studio as long as it fits two girls. Also if it were very close to a subway that'd be even better! I saw some apartments in Inwood, Chelsea, and Washington Heights for around 800-900 dollars a month. What do you all think?
Cheap and saft don't usually go hand and hand. If you are looking at Long island ( nassau and Suffolk county ) you will not be near a train except the Long Island Rail Road and you still will need to drive to it. Queens county may be good for you, but their are not too many great areas to live anymore. and you will still need the long island rail road to get into the city. Bayside and little neck are good towns, not cheap, but you may get lucky. Forest hills may work out for you, pretty affordable and close to trains, just some food for thought.
Alright I wouldn't reccomend Washington Heights or Innwood unless you are from the Dominican Republic. Hudson Heights, which is next-door to that area is fine, but is somewhat dull and I believe more expensive than what you can afford.
I doubt you are going to find anything, as the previous poster said, in Forrest Hills or Bayside for $800-900 a month. If you can find something though, that would be good area to reside in.
Also look into areas like Bensonhurst, Dyker Heights, Bath Beach, and Bay Ridge in Brooklyn. These areas are all nice and somewhat affordable.
There is also the North Bronx. Neighborhoods like Morris Park, Woodlawn, Country Club, and Riverdale are good, and also cheap.
If you can find a place anywhere in Manhattan for $900 that is below 96th street on the east side and 110th on the west side of town, of course take it. But I am under the impression that no such place exists unless it is some rent stabilized apartment that your Aunt has been living in for the past 20-30 years.
I would stay away from Inwood and Washington Heights. Try Astoria it's just a 5 minute walk to the subway and a 20 minute subway ride to NYC.
You are not going to find $800 or $900 anywhere at current market rents anywhere in Queens or Brooklyn except for maybe south Jamaica or right by JFK airport. Forget anywhere in Manhattan unless you have $2,000+ a month for rent and have nearly perfect credit and earn 45 times the monthly rent.
The area around Astoria is one of the most expensive in Queens thanks to this new uber trendiness. You can't find a tiney one bedroom apartment for less than $1,800 a month rent and then compete with at least 10 others who want to rent that apartment as well.
