I'm not quite that old (still under 60.) I also never smoked (rare in my family.) So if any part of me is in good shape, it's may lungs. I have a feeling when all the research on this is done, smoking, and the lung damage/diseases it causes, will be a big indicator or mortality. BTW, this will likely include pot smoking and possibly vaping.

It's not illegal to go out in public, yet. I was just in Central Park, and it was FAR from empty. It's not illegal to go anywhere in the city AFAIK

Whether or not anyone else goes, I may go down there Tuesday regardless, just to experience an empty Times Square. I used to work in that general area, and I've never seen it anything like empty.

No one is dumb enough to show up with a bunch of people on Times Square. You’ll be there by yourself.

Try not to get arrested, it’s spreading in criminal justice facilities.

Merkel is putting herself in self-quarantine because she was in contact with someone who tested positive--that's not strictly equivalent to her having it.

Totally agree. In a lighter note, here's a recent post from my neighborhood Facebook group:

Well, I finally flipped out !!!

I was just in Key Food on Queens Blvd., and saw a man whose cart was FULL to the brim with hand sanitizers, baby wipes, soaps, everything that people need!!

I called him a selfish ass, and gave him an earful about the elderly, moms, and people who need these types of things. Told him he should be freaking ashamed of himself!

He said: “Sir, I manage this store, and I really need to get back to stocking the shelves now...”

Its a weird feeling. Empty, a depressing energy. Ive been there everyday. Bryant Park has had people though.

I thought about the Billy Joel song where he says how the lights go down on Broadway. And now its happened sadly.

The lockdown in NOT sustainable for that period of time. I doubt it's sustainable beyond a few weeks. Until everyone who's left develops some level or immunity, or until they get out a vaccine, this is something we're going to have to figure out how to function with on something like a normal ongoing basis.
The lockdown can be released if it ends up looking like the better option. There is no natural law of the lockdown lasting nine months. You can control the duration of a lockdown and lift it almost immediately if it looks like the better option, but you have far more limited control over the extent of the virus's spread if you underreact initially.

If people are developing antibodies to it from getting it and recovering, which should be the case as that's what people do, then why have a massive cohort of people get it around the same time and overload the healthcare system? What do you think the underlyiing concept of flattening the curve is supposed to be? You may be having a fundamental lack of understanding of what the lockdown's purpose is.

How crowded has Central Park been? Yesterday I went to LIC Gantry Park and it looked like this - plenty of distance between people for the most part
