Hi everybody! Next year it'll be my three time in New York and I'd like to discover different places in the town, less tourist. So, among my favourite destinations, I'd hope to see better Harlem and I'd have two questions about that: are there in the neighbourhood some italian-american street? I Know that in the past there was a big italian-american comunity...
And, at last, where can I still find an original afro-american area, like was the primordial Harlem in the 70's?
Thanks a lot

The Italians fled Harlem decades ago, Italian Harlem is now Spanish Harlem. The AA population is mainly concentrated in Central Harlem.

ddavide,

You might want to skip Harlem and still go non-touristy...just not THAT non-touristy.

Wandering Harlem as a wide eyed tourist might be a little dicey...especially if you go around asking "Where are all the Italians?"

So, are you saying that isn't a fascinating area to see if I will find, for example, an old and unchanged afro-american zone?

Well, it still has a lot of Blacks, but it's seen an increase in Whites (and Hispanics to a lesser extent), so it isn't really "unchanged".

But most of the Blacks live in the area between 5th Avenue at St. Nicholas Avenue, from Central Park to the Harlem River. East and West Harlem are mostly Hispanic.
