Not sure about the jewish community part of your question but I would guess
that it might be in Las Cruces or possibly in Silver city. The beach part
is easy and that would be San Diego or LA unless you would be ok with
the elephant butte lake but living most of my life in LA we wouldn't dare
call a lake a beach. Your question regarding shopping for unique things
could be in Las Cruces but for me it might be in Silver City or Tucson. Keep
in mind I do not live in Deming but I was there yesterday after a dental
appointment in Palomas, Mx and I don't live all that far from Deming.
For me the most interesting thing about Deming is that it's fairly close
to a lot of things. I go to Tucson a lot so if you lived in Deming it
would be only about 4 to 4.5 hour drive over there. Possibly less if you
drive faster. Also Silver City is about 50 miles and LC is not to much further.
I guess if you live in a larger city you might miss some of the conveinces
and this would mean more driving. I looked at a house for sale by owner
yesterday and the owners had lived in Deming for 9 years but were moving
back to Seattle for better medical and to be near better shopping.
I also forgot but the amtrak used to stop at Deming going to LA. I'm
not sure if it still does but I think it might run three days per week.

Good Luck

Deming is lovely. Perhaps your influence has to do with the people you are hanging out with.

Do people live in Las Cruces and drive to Deming for work?

Default Power

My wife and I have property about 2 miles East of the Floridas. We are planning to retire there. I was wondering, I think PNM only runs power lines out the paved roads and in a remote area how do you power the place? (solar? Wind?). I don't want to spend thousands of dollars to get power lines run out there.

Smile retiring in deming

Have been looking for a great place to retire in New Mexico I live in Florida and am looking for something different.Sick of Hurricane season, and the over crowded roads.Don't mind the cold especially at night.Country Club Estates has my dream home we can readily pay cash for .We also need room for our RV,which they have.
My question is about health care.Is there any particular supplemental insurance that is best for the area?I noted that there is only one hospital. Is the nearest trauma center in Las Cruces?

I moved here from FL (to get away from [8] hurricanes too) about a year or so ago. :-)

I arrived during the worst dust storm season that even the oldest of the locals could remember. Visibility was worse that the worst S. FL downpour you could imagine, with fine dust coming in thru any crack possible, and then was hit by a few flying mud storms (haboobs). Fortunately this spring was nothing like last spring, and was barely windy in comparison. Beware of buying east of farmland - blowing dust.

The heat here is different that FL - you get dehydrated really easy in spring summer. The temps pretty much are the same - but very dry which makes it pleasant. Just no working outside midday, not for long at least.

As far as medical, I needed surgery when I first moved here, and the local doc refused to operate at the Deming hospital to up to Silver City for that. For trauma, I think you have to go to El Paso, TX, but I've also heard talk about some cross-state line changes in federal law - about going cross-state lines in trauama choppers so foggedabowdit... Last year I did see what looked like a trauma chopper picking up someone east of town (ambulance, police). There's some good hospitals in Cruces. Actually, all the docs in Deming I've dealt with were excellent (and I have a medical background). Don't know anything about supplemental insurance.

The roads are definitely not crowded.

There is not much to do around here, which suits me just fine! But if you need bulk shopping, movie theatre, entertainment, etc. you are looking at a 70+ mile drive to Cruces, which pretty much kills the day. There is a movie rental store up in town

Oh, and there were flooding issues last year in the monsoon season. I'd pay close attention to floorboards, doors, etc. and look for signs of flooding inside. The house just a "tad" down the road is new and beautiful, but was about 12" underwater last summer... and you wouldn't necessarily notice the change in elevation when driving slow down the road. (I don't know if flooding was an issue CCE - ask around.) On one road in town last year, the telephone poles actually came down from the sand getting too soft, and water in that area was right up to the homes. The neighbor the next road down from me (about 1/4 mile) couldn't even get to/from his home a number of times, and the county refuses to grade the sand road.

Camp in your RV in town or the outskirts and roam around :-)

I've found people are very friendly here.

rabbit08 - I have at least one neighbor totally "off-grid". He uses a combo of solar and wind. I have yet to catch him at home though to learn the details about it, but I do see the wind generator and the solar panels, an area that is probably a battery storage area, and another area that looks like a water storage tank to store water pumped up.
