hi, I was ticketed couple days ago (sunday at 7.30am) between exit 155 and 156 northbound clocked at 90mph in a 55mph zone on the GSP. I usually don't speed but yesterday I wanted to make it to a family event in upstate NY, thus my mistake.
I was wondering if I can just go to the court (clifton) and get the points dropped or atleast reduced (from 5 points) by paying a higher fine directly instead of going through a lawyer. Is anyone familiar with the clifton court. this is my first ticket written by a cop in several years other than two red light camera violations which do not give any points. thanks
Government love money, they will take more money over anything. If possible, I would request all point drops as it will hit your insurance hard. I have had a non-moving violation with 2 points and my insurance company increased my premium by 40%. YES, FORTY PERCENT!!!! Needless to say, I dropped them.
yes you can get it knocked down. I did in it when I was in my hey day of driving like a nut. They reduced the points. Everyone now in NJ at least has tickets, its become a cash cow for the police, so be prepared to sit all night. No need for a lawyer.
Luckily Im not famiiar with Clifton, lol.
Most NJ courts will knock it down to 2 points,i.e. 74 in a 65 or offer you the unsafe driving special at about $485, usually your choice.
Thanks everyone. Looks like I'll have to go to court. Also, on the ticket, court appearance required is not checked but the date and time for the court appearance is filled which is a saturday which seems odd.
I would call the phone number of the court clerk. At least three days before like they advise. Tell them you are pleading not guilty. Some towns will have you come in on that day, many others will mail you a notice of when to come in. Might save yourself an extra trip.

thanks. I received a notice in the mail to show up tuesday morning at 8.45AM. Does anyone know if it will be all day or something because I thought of taking off from work just in the morning. thanks

Depends on how many people they've nabbed lately My advice would be to take off the whole day-these things can move pretty slowly. Be prepared to write a check for about $500 with court costs, etc...
Lawyer will most likely only take away from your fine money. You can plea yourself.
