Should I get a lawyer or is this ok.. One lawyer I talked to said I could lose my license. I have no points and a clean rec.. What do you think thanks for the help
You should talk to the prosecuter. Anytime you are going 25+ MPH over the limit, especially in a safety zone which most of the highways in NJ are, you risk losing your licesne for 6 months.
It is at the discression of the judge and prosecutor based on how fast you were going, what the speed limit was in the area, what the conditons on the road were at the time of the ticket etc.
You are definitely going to get points on your license and a hefty fine as the fines are also doubled in the safety zones and you will also be responsible for all court costs. I would not wast money on an attorney as he/she will do the same thing you can do on your own...plead your case to the prosecutor. If you seem remorseful, admit what you did and have a clean license they might plead you down to a 2 point ticket vs. 4 point ticket with no loss of license. If you start throwing out a lot of excuses they will not have any sympathy.
i agree with JCK. i just contested an improper passing ticket and no one with a lawyer did any better than I did. 96 thon 287 though, man, slow down, that road cannot handle that speed.
I would definitely speak with an attorney beforehand. I got nailed for 105 in a 65 once, but thankfully that was just a hefty fine, and no points (I don't know how I pulled that off). You're probably facing 2000 plus dollars in fines for this ticket.
My opinion, you just let them know it was a dumb mistake, will not happen again and let them know of your previous good record, your need to drive to work etc. and also suggest paying a larger fine. They make more $$$ with you on the road...

I kinda hope you do lose your license. I need you driving past me at 96 on 287? I hope you were driving like that to get to the hospital so you didn't miss the birth of your child or something equally as urgent......
I wouldn't admit you were wrong. Lawyers are basically useless for traffic violations. Just go and speak to the prosecutor and he will most likely reduce your speeding ticket so that it's only a 2 pointer. You may even be able to get it reduced to "unsafe driving" which would be 0 points on your insurance. You probably won't even have to say anything to the prosecutor when you get called up. If he asks anything, just tell him you didn't realize you were going that fast and point out you do have a clean driving record. The clean driving record will help you out a lot.
I have family in Salem County and when I drive down to visit them, I'll go up to 85-ish on parts of the turnpike (mostly below exit 5). It's straight as an arrow and when there's no traffic...I don't know...I'll speed just to end the monotony as soon as possible. However, I have one eye out for any hidden fuzz in the trees and my third eye on the rear view looking for flashing lights. In other words, I feel irresponsible going 85 on a straight-away with no traffic.
I can't believe anyone feels comfortable going 97 mph on 287.
Or 105 mph anywhere in the 3-dimensional world where space and time are separate entities.
What are you people trying to do? Go back to the future?
Forgive me for saying this, but if you're doing 96 MPH on 287, you really shouldn't be driving.
That said, you can talk to the prosecutor, and plead down if it's your first offense. AND SLOW THE EFF DOWN.
