Back in 1863, the Yankees were blockading the shipping routes off the southern coast so that cotton from the rebel states couldn't get through to England. As a result, cotton mills in Manchester were closing and people were out of work.
A married couple who was affected by the closing of the cotton mills decided to come to Paterson, NJ, in the US, where there was work in the silk mills. They were my great-great-grandparents.
So, yes, people have come to NJ to make $$$$ for a long time!
