alarm systems aren't that complicated. if something opens, it will go off. mine uses cellular technology so you cant cut a cord. I cant imagine a robber would stick around too long with the alarm going. the cops don't take too long to arrive. I doubt its worth killing my dog to steal some of my stuff.

motion detecting flood lights are also a no brainer. might as well get one with a camera also. now they have camera systems to put around and its not that expensive.
i know people who have had their alarms go off and the police didn't come, as they were trying to shut the false alarm down and never notified police of a false alarm. some towns actually have instituted a $50 fee for false alarms. i think it'll scare away your petty-thieves, like a group of high schoolers who might troll a neighborhood looking for trouble (happened to a neighbor 2 years ago, ironically, the only house on the street without a home security sign in their front yard). But a "professional" is just gonna go in real quick, grab a few valuable items, and be gone.

Default Totally worth it

Whether or not to pay for a home security system is kind of a polarizing discussion. They cost a decent chunk of change, and do not always work. That being said, if you ever saw a list of people whose lives were saved or property was protected by a security system, you would be convinced of their value. Just think of it in terms of giving yourself and your loved ones the greatest chance at being safe and protected. That is never a guarantee, especially these days, but you want to get as close to a guarantee as you can.
