Traffic on Wednesday and Thursday on the NJTPK is going to be a major hassle the entire length with bottlenecks at each of the major entrances (13A for EWR, 11 for the GSP, 9 for New Brunswick). The biggest problem will be at merge down here at 8A.

I agree with Camaro, the earlier you can get out of the City, the better. I would say a 2 PM start time on Thursday will get you down to the DMB around 6 or 7 PM if you are lucky.

"Will anyone be traveling thanksgiving afternoon?"

There is usually a window where the traffic lightens up between 5 and 7 PM when most people are "in" for dinner. BUT keep in mind this closes really quickly with people heading out to the malls, especially around Christiana, DE, and down by Tinmonium and White Marsh.

Yes, there will be people on the road Thanksgiving afternoon. Whether or not it's Thanksgiving doesn't matter...the NJ Turnpike always has bottlenecks, regardless of time of day or year, where RUNYYfan already stated.

Can I tack on my own question here?

What do you guys think traffic will be like on FRIDAY? I don't usually drive anywhere for Thanksgiving, so I'm not really sure what to expect. This year, I will have to travel on the NJ Turnpike from exit 15 all the way down to exit 1 (and the reverse for the drive back).

I'm debating whether to leave on THURSDAY NIGHT after dinner (I guess around 9 or 10 PM), OR, stay overnight and drive back up on FRIDAY. Which one of these time frames do you think will give me less agita and a smaller tension headache? (If Friday, Friday morning? Friday afternoon?)

I dread being on the road with people late at night, who've had pre-dinner cocktails, half a bottle of wine with dinner, and after dinner cordials. I also dread being on the road with Black Friday nutjobs that have tunnel vision towards the mall and dollar signs in their eyes.

Traffic should be fine on the Turnpike. Traffic around malls and shopping centers will be crazy. No one really works on Friday, but it is Black Friday.

Traffic on Thanksgiving night should be fine.

seque5tra, northbound traffic is going to build around significantly around Exits 4, 5, 6, 7A, 10, 11, and 13A anytime after 10 PM Thursday night.

I agree with you. Between the drunks and the stunads I'd personally prefer leaving around mid-morning Friday and contending with the slowdowns at a few of the exits I listed.

Just be aware the biggest slowdowns are going to be in the early morning and mid-afternoon at 7A for the Jackson Outlet Center; 10 for Routes 1 and 287 with people getting to the Menlo Park, Woodbridge, and Staten Island Malls; 13A for the Jersey City Commons.

Be thankful that monstrosity by MetLife Stadium isn't operational or you might have to swim through the marshes to get home.

A valid concern. I heard a piece on the news that said there are more DWI fatalities on Thanksgiving than New Years. I would rather sleep in my own bed but we're going to stay where we're eating and drive home in the morning. I once drove home from the Hamptons to Brooklyn and it took 4 hours. It was a horror I will never chance duplicating.
