A valid concern. I heard a piece on the news that said there are more DWI fatalities on Thanksgiving than New Years. I would rather sleep in my own bed but we're going to stay where we're eating and drive home in the morning. I once drove home from the Hamptons to Brooklyn and it took 4 hours. It was a horror I will never chance duplicating.
Well, a majority of DUI fatalities happen either in head on collisions or passengers of the person who is DUI not wearing their seatbelts. For head-on collisions, the good thing about the turnpike is that the barriers prevent this.
Your safest bet to avoid a DUI accident on the Turnpike is to stay in the right hand lane, and wear your seatbelts.
seque5tra, northbound traffic is going to build around significantly around Exits 4, 5, 6, 7A, 10, 11, and 13A anytime after 10 PM Thursday night.
I agree with you. Between the drunks and the stunads I'd personally prefer leaving around mid-morning Friday and contending with the slowdowns at a few of the exits I listed.
Just be aware the biggest slowdowns are going to be in the early morning and mid-afternoon at 7A for the Jackson Outlet Center; 10 for Routes 1 and 287 with people getting to the Menlo Park, Woodbridge, and Staten Island Malls; 13A for the Jersey City Commons.
Be thankful that monstrosity by MetLife Stadium isn't operational or you might have to swim through the marshes to get home.
Ugh, lol. I'm gonna have to prepare for this mentally and emotionally starting right now. Thanks RUNYYfan. Hopefully, the radio stations won't be playing Christmas songs to add to the torture.

Oh man. I guess maybe people take extra, extra care on New Year's to have a designated driver, since it's notorious for being a party holiday. And I guess, too, there are probably more people on the road for Thanksgiving.
