All this would cost 2-3 Billion and take 5 years , but would allow for higher capacities... and one seat rides form Manhattan. Aside form those lines it doesn't seem like NJT is going to electrify anything. The AC line would benefit form this , the trains are currently sent up to Kearny and fueled then sent back down and stored in Morrisville. NJT already has the line upgraded , all they need is new poles ,a few substations , and a Yard along the line.....
I wonder how many decades it would take to make it worth electrifying the line? That and how much it would cost to allow for it to better connect with the NEC, because right now that's the biggest hamper to increasing service on the line (other than NJT sucking at life ) Personally, I'd love to see them oneday build a tunnel in to Philly, but that ain't gonna happen for a VERY, VERY, VERY long time, if ever.

Amtrak and Septa really need to overhaul those wires , before NJT even electrify anything down in SJ. As for Capacity issues , the NEC in PA will be upgraded , so no new Tunnel need to Philly. The PATCO will also reopen Franklin SQ , which will become part of a transfer station to the proposed DRPA Waterfront / Naval Yards Light Rail system.... A private Company might take over Septa's Urban Rail operations which will then be overhauled and expanded.... MTR form HK and JR East are looking into this.... Electrifying any line depends on what is along the line , the AC line might be the easiet and cheapest... Probably only costing 50 Million....there are only 2 Bridges on the route as opposed to the other lines like the NJCL or MOM network which would require bridge replacement. The AC line is also the fastest Diesel line in the state , same with the Cape May line which have averages of 70mph and max of 100mph. There both flat and have few crossings....that are spaced out....that also helps with Electrification..... Form what i know SJ is getting alot of small things that will make it easier to expand down the road...

I know they're improving the NEC, but will that mean that ACL trains no longer need to cross over the NEC? The reason I would like to one day see a tunnel, is so that trains no longer need to go all the way around Philly and to provide a more direct connection to Center City. I'm pretty sure they designed Market Street East for the construction of a tunnel to NJ one day, so who knows?

When Market East is designed for Electric trains , there is a proposal to build a connector form the Center City lines in North Philly to the NEC which if the AC line was Electrified trains could change to Temple Univ , Market East , Suburban Station... The Franklin SQ reopening will allow for greater Access to Center City Philly and more connections to MFL , Trollies and proposed Waterfront LRT...

In the 60s, when the feds were flush with money & looking to seed rail, DRPA jumped on it. San Francisco studied the little PATCO line & spunit into the BART system.

DRPA tried to expand but got nowhere with NJT. DRPA did look into the costs of a tunnel & it was prohibitively expensive then. There was talk of a separate bridge which would be exclusively for trains, in lieu of a tunnel.

Nexis, ya think Christie will try to get some of the train money that Florida turned down?

They have the connector to the NEC and North Philly, that's why they built Market Street East and stopped using the original Reading Terminal.

Yea but that doesn't allow for trains coming form the North / East to switch South and go to Temple / Market East. Only trains form Chestnut Hill West can use that line ....

We already have 3 Billion $$ worth of NEC projects underway...as you can see NJ is one a few key states...

Great assortment of maps, Nexis. You get a gold star on that.

Yeah, VA is responsible to get track upgrades from Richmond to the NC line going towards Raleigh. NCDOT is working on the tracks between Raleigh & Charlotte now. I think that at first Charlotte will terminate the high speed until they can get to Atlanta. That would actually be good because there have been 2 accidents with the northbound Crescent since Christmas in towns west of Charlotte. At high speed, the results would be horrific. They're going to have to figure out how to deal with high speed coming through towns on street level, I suppose.
