The problem is that there are still A LOT of kids that aren't in pre-k so when you walk into a Kindergarten class you have kids that are ready to read and then you have kids that don't know the alphabet. It's true that by the end of 1st grade most kids catch up but new research is showing that although all these kids appear equal through high school that the kids that had the quality Pre-K end up with better jobs.
For those of you considering private Kindergarten it's not a bad idea. I should have paid for private K last year so my daughter could enter 1st grade this year (she also missed the district cut off) and then I wouldn't have been faced with such a huge wrap-around care bill this year ($170 per week). My town only has 1/2 day K. So now I'm putting her in Private Kindergarten where she is one of the oldest kids and much further along than most of the other kids both socially and academically. It's $30 more per week than the wrap-around care but much more enriching.
