We are planned to relocate to Nashville area soon. My husband was born and raised and we really want a change and he has always wanted to be back in TN. My question is, is the Nashville area (specifically Smyrna and Murfreesboro) considered friendly?

When I visited there last week, I was surprised to find that when I passed two people (on 2 separate occasions) in the hotel and said hello, nothing was said back. It may be stereotypical to think that South=friendly, but I wanted to see if this was normal.

The South is generally known for our Southern hospitality. Were the 2 people you passed in the hotel guests? If so, you have no idea where they are from.

I think as the world or this country in general continues to slide downhill, friendly people will continue to fade away.

Middle Tennessee has so many new transplants from others places it's crazy and they don't do the " hello, maam, sir, goodbye, and wave " type things that the stereotypical South is thought to have.

They were visiting here and not natives.

I've lived in the west, midwest, europe and now, tennessee. I find Nashville to be just friendly enough. By that I mean, people are cordial and pleasant to deal with on a daily basis without being all over you. I work all over the south and honestly, sometimes people can be smothering when what you really want to do is get your work done and be on with it. IMHO, sometimes you can sugarcoat everything will all kinds of friendly phrases, but it can ring very hollow if it's all just a front, you know?

It really depends what you're used to. I love people in the midwest because it's where I lived most of my life. One of my best friends is from Jersey and she likes people from the east coast because they stay out of your business and don't bother you about where you go to church and stuff like that. LOL it's all relative...but I definitely would not call people from the nashville area rude.

I think most everywhere it begins with you, and then there are those who aren't doing well for whatever reason. People who don't say hi, could be mourning a loss, or whatever.

But in general, universally, it begins with our own attitude.

I've recently moved here (well 2 years ago) and I find it very friendly.

YMMV. hehe

I'll add that I've lived in Cali, WA, MD, ND, TX, and here.

And still, yes, they're friendly.

I'm a greeter even when I was growing up elsewhere. And I found out people here still have that. It's just so nice to have people actually responding back.

i am not from the south, but i have found people here to be noticeably more friendly than on the east coast.

when i first got here, every young woman i passed made eye contact and smiled. i was getting pretty pleased with myself, until i realized that is just the way it is around here. small things can make a big difference.

I was voted Friendliest of my senior class. That was a hundred years or so ago and it still applies. Of course, what I hear now from department heads around the building is "would you stop terrorizing my people." (not that they feel all that terrorized, lol). That's of course when I'm on a particularly friendly visitation binge. I'm free to roam at will...and I do.
