Passive vs. active. Look it up if you're not familiar with the difference.

Good music, to me, is worth actively seeking out. I realize for others it's little more than audible wallpaper and isn't worth the trouble if it isn't going to be spoonfed.

Of course it works. I just did it. I got lists from Pitchfork, Paste, NME, Billboard, Punknews, Indie Rock Cafe, and Radio.com. That's just the first page of results. If there's nothing on any of those lists that appeals to you, that probably says more about you than about the state of current music.

I sure miss turning on the radio and hearing 1970s and earlier top 40 music (back when you didn't have to "look" for good music). Today's top 40, and non-top 40, just isn't the same. It's light years different, and not in a good way. Fortunately, there are still some oldies music radio stations (even if some include '80s music, which I am not fond of in general). I won't even mention '90s and later!

I think since the eighties the enormous amount of money that is generated by pop music has put a burden on the quality of pop music. Pop music has become too commercial and that has caused the music to compromise its artistic standards. Popular music in America grew out of what was called the Art Song around the early 19th century. (Stephen Foster) Each aspect of the song had to be of the highest artistic standard. Sometimes the lyrics were culled from the great poets and the melodies culled from beautiful operatic melodies.

When was the last time a pop song was so great that it was re-recorded by other artist or crossed over into being a Jazz instrumental hit or standard? "True Colors" by Cindi Lauper comes to mind and "That's Your Trouble" was recorded by the the Judds and the Dixie Chicks.

Lots of garbage mixed in with the good stuff on that list.

If you don't want to look for good new music then you're just missing out on bands like this. Your loss.

You know, it's beyond ridiculous that people don't want to "look for" new music. They're already on this forum, and people post new music here all the time. The new music is right in front of their face, being handed right to them, and yet they still say it's too hard. I don't get it. How could it possibly get any easier?
