Actually, movies can be a great way to get to know a culture. And this film might be a little more accessible to people who have no experience with Indian film culture: it is more Americanized (probably because it is British), but did include some very Indian elements (like the dance at the end).

Additionally, I think this film helped people become slightly more aware of India. Look at all the press the kids from the film got regarding their living situation. And while I would take that with a grain of salt (Umm, what about all the other homeless children living in India??), at least it blipped on peoples' radar. India is a huge nation, and more attention should probably be paid to it by people in our contry. At the very least in order to have a stronger grasp of global politics, given India's size.

If the film isn't your cup of Chai, so be it. Everyone likes different things. But I think in the end, the fact that so many people have seen this movie is a positive thing. It never hurts to expand your horizons.

natalayjones,

In reply to your question althought I didn't see all the best picture nominees I really enjoyed "Benjamin Buttons."

I thought Slumdog was better than Benjamin Buttons. While the growing younger angle was interesting, the movie was just too long.

Watching the art and entertainment is other cultures is a great way to learn. Not to mention that this movie accurately depicts much of the Indian culture.

Why even study Indian culture in the first place?

Why not?

To educate yourself and broaden your horizons. India has a long and eventful history that anyone could learn from.

Why India? Why not Germany or Britain, for instance?

Nothing wrong with educating yourself on those cultures as well.

I agree with Natalay about Benjamin Buttons. They could have cut about an hour from this movie and we would still get the point.

That scene where she got hit by the car did me in...I was like "did they really just take 15 minutes to explain how she got hit by a car!!!"
