My husband brought home Slumdog Millionaire to watch tonight. I've heard it's a great movie but the beginning is depressing. I don't relish the though of seeing scenes where child are abused. Is this just at the beginning? If I join him after the first half hour or so will I like the movie better?

There's really one scene that you might want to avoid, particularly if you're highly sensitive to these things. It occurs about 1/3 into the movie.

Other than that, I would say you should be fine watching from beginning to end. Slumdog is a long movie, but moves pretty quickly. If you skip out on the first part you'll have trouble following the rest of the story.

Plus, IMO the acting by the little children was the best thing in the movie.

Thanks. Can you give me an idea what happens right before the scene I want to avoid so I know when to get up and leave the room?

I had seen it alone, and then my husband and I rented it. He wanted to quit after seeing the boy getting his eyes burned out, but I told him to stick with it. He did and liked it. His boss goes to India quite often and said it was just as the movie..Very sad indeed for the children.

Uh, pretty much the whole movie is abuse and torture. So, no...it doesn't get that much better in that sense. But it's a darn good movie.

Oh my, doesn't sound like something I want to watch at all. I'm sad that things happen like that in India but it's not like I have any power to stop it and watching scenes like that is not my idea of something I want to do.

You have to watch the whole film in order to get the full effect. The child abuse is sad but it's true that things like this do happen in developing countries...Good luck.

No. The movie would not be as dramatic if you skip the beginning. Besides, the beginning is not that bad. Just avert your eyes if you are overly sensitive.

It's very much a Horatio Alger-esque rags to riches story. It's nothing groundbreaking, but it's enjoyable.
