Just watched John Grisham's The Rainmaker, with Matt Damon, Claire Danes, Danny Devito, Virginia Madsen, danny Glover, Roy Scheider and Jon Voight; it was wonderful.
I also finally saw 'Black Swan' yesterday, and it was exceptional.
I'm watching 'Delta Farce' right now and it may be the 'Best'--loling and providing great insight into the military. Glad they are able to do what they do--never suspected that they had a sense of humor--I recommend 'Delta Farce'.
"The Eagle" which I saw at the cinema last night. I really enjoyed it. Having expected a real CGE fest I was surprised that it had a slow pace, and looked quite realistic. Channing Tatum might not have been my first choice as lead but he does the job well enough , Jamie Bell was excellent though. I was fascinated by the depiction of the "Seal people" as there is very little we know about the Picts . From an Archaeologist's point of view I felt the film had tried very hard . It does have to play loose a little with history but mostly on points we know very little about which to me is acceptable.
Sets , costumes and battle choregraphy were superb, a good old fashioned story and IMO an excellent adaptation of Rosemary Sutcliff's novel. It was wonderful to see a director able to reign in the usual orgy of special effects and keep it simple. It shows that it is possible and that an action film can be more effective and entertaining without it.
Some critics have complained that the battles scenes are not gory enough and too fast for the action to be grasped but to me historically this is what a battle is. Confused, fast moving and usually over pretty quickly.
It gives you a sense in many ways of the utter sense of chaos a Testudo formation under attack by "crazed" Native warriors for example would have been like. It felt very real and put you right in the middle of it. Slow motion would have defeated the purpose of the exercise.

Watched The Tourist starring Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp, last night. It was good, but not amazing. Glad I got to see it for free.
