Just picked up the Spider-Man Homecoming Steelbook from Best Buy https://www.bestbuy.com/site/spider-man-homecoming-digital-copy-4k-ultra-hd-blu-ray-blu-ray-steelbook-only--best-buy-2017/5916905.p?skuId=5916905
I went in thinking it was a biopic (about Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall). It isn't. It focuses only on one case, in 1941, and evidently it's not a very significant case. I'm not sure why the movie chose to focus on that one. Nevertheless, the movie showed what kind of character Marshall had and what kind of obstacles (such as blatant racism) he had to deal with. I enjoyed the movie, and Chadwick Boseman is always great to watch. I recommend for the history.
(It's also kind of interesting to think about Marshall in the same context of last summer's Hidden Figures, set 25 years later. In Hidden Figures, the racism is a little softened, but still overt. But the movies had very different tones. Marshall is dark/somber/serious. The subject matter is serious after all: the trial is for a black man accused of raping and then trying to kill his white socialite employer. Whereas Hidden Figures is bright/colorful/hopeful. It has a joyous quality, and even though the racism is there and apparent, you also get a sense of unity, in that the American people, across the spectrum, were so invested emotionally in the success of the space program.)...
We saw "Marshall" yesterday--
Thought it was not that successful...
Couldn't decide if it wanted to be a biography (with Marshall's family life scenes) or the civil rights/court case emphasis...
Reminded me of "To Kill a Mockingbird" court case where the Ewell girl was the one pursuing Tom Robinson, the black man....same situation w/the upper class, abused wife wanting sympathy and sex from the chauffeur...just happier ending...
Personally I thought Boseman was better in "42" as Jackie Robinson than as Marshall--he has a limited capacity I think...
We thought Josh Gad was pretty good and Sterling Brown was excellent in a supporting role...think he would have been a stronger Marshall...
So many of the scenes were awkward--the one where Marshall is at the house where he is staying and he and the wife of the NAACP rep were standing so close together I though one of them was going to make a move on the other----that was (to me) a very poorly staged scene...
I didn't look that case up to see how much they manipulated the facts to suit the script...
Saw "Only the Brave" today
Didn't look up the real history of Granite Mountain HotShots so ending was a surprise
Thought acting was strong--Jennifer Connelly was excellent--might get another nomination---Brolin was charismatic
James Badge Dale very good--in a part that didn't give him as much of the story line as he could handle
Miles Teller had big part of the script--some parts he did very good, some not so good--maybe that in part is script's fault
-hard to bring in personal stories to meld with the fire/action story line and w/o reading up hard to know how accurate the personal stories were...
The fire aspect is very scary---lot shot on location--
Couldn't pay me enough to do what those "hot shots" do...even if I was in physical condition to attempt it...
I also saw Only the Brave. Enjoyed the movie a lot and thought the performances were excellent - Josh Brolin, Jeff Bridges, Miles Teller & Jennifer Connelly. Liked them all.
CHE
re the Argentine, Che Guevara, that led the Cuban guerilla revolution, on Netflix
Long but very good, Benicio del Toro won several awards for his performance
Tree Gelbman is a blissfully self-centered collegian who wakes up on her birthday in the bed of a student named Carter. As the morning goes on, Tree gets the eerie feeling that she's experienced the events of this day before.
I have to say that this was not as horrible as I thought it was going to be. Very Ground Hogs Day ( they even make a reference to it in this movie). I would say worth a watch.
