This was his first with a big name cast - Rachel Weisz, Colin Farrell, and Lea Seydoux (Blue is the Warmest Color, The Grand Budapest Hotel). Great performance by Ariane Labed, who plays the maid, and had the starring role in Alps. The heartless woman is played by Angeliki Papoulia - who is in Dogtooth. I think this may be one of the roles made for John C. Reilly.

When I heard of this coming out, and sneaking a peak at a few seconds of the trailer, so as to not spoil the whole movie, I was more than eager to see this. With the track record of this town for limited releases, which I thought this would be, I went with a PAL Amazon UK dvd for 13 usd shipped. Now it's playing at a couple theaters. Go figure.

I thoroughly enjoyed it. Not a blockbuster. Not the kind of comedy most people are used to - but I lol several times. A dystopian city where people go along and serve out their roles, which ever path is chosen. His films remind me of Roy Andersson's work (Songs from the Second Floor (2000), You, the Living (2007), A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence (2014)), which also defy categorization and if you like any of them, you'll want to see them all.

One thing I'll say about one of the driving points in the film is love. Not the kind of love that comes to mind to the people watching this. But something that needs to be proved - for reasons that become apparent. A third person looking on has to be thoroughly and positively convinced. There can be no doubt.

Spoiler
A dead dog, self mutilation.

Currently ranked #2 for 2016.

I'll go see this again on the big screen on $4.00 senior Wednesday tomorrow.
I really liked this too, and I laughed quite a bit. It's definitely not your typical Hollywood comedy, and if you go in expecting that you'll be disappointed.

My husband and I like indie, absurdist, "out there" movies a lot, so we didn't go in expecting a typical Hollywood comedy at all. We knew it would be strange and dark - we fully expected that. When we saw the trailer, we liked the premise and idea behind the movie plot, but once in the theater seats, the execution of the story was terrible. And yes, we laughed many times during the movie.

But laughing at a few scenes and having an understanding of what the director/writer was trying to convey (love isn't just a feeling but an action) doesn't mean it was a good movie.

Just back from The Lobster. Jarring soundtrack. Those cello notes are like knife slashes. No one walked out in my showing. Sat through all of the credits and they kept it dark! Kudos to Regal - this time. They did have the tall guy (usher) walk in front of me 3 times to get to the thermometer reading below the screen on the right. I thought the requirement was 2 checks?

Nobody left my showing either. I'm actually not surprised this film is so polarizing, I think you either really love it or hate it. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and I didn't find it depressing at all. As they say, different strokes.

Glad you mentioned the soundtrack. Any film with Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds is a huge plus for me!

Now back on topic:

Maggie's Plan (2016) Rebecca Miller ★★★1/2 I thought Julianne Moore was great as always. Ethan Hawke and Greta Gerwig were also good, but I was just expecting more I guess from such a great cast. Entertaining, but probably worth waiting for DVD.
