Danny Boyle said the actors auditioned for the part. The actors had to be able to act AND play Beatles music themselves and that was what they judged the part on. I liked the actor myself. I had zero problem with him. I think the script was silly and corny, but that's Richard Curtis. There are some cool Danny Boyle edges to it. I have to say I liked it MUCH better the second time.
I thought the entire cast was great, I didn't think there was anything wrong with the lead.
