I was liking "Angel-A" (French) I don't think I have ever seen such long legs on a person.
"Breakfast on Pluto" (UK) is both hilarious and heart-rending.
There was a movie in Spanish, the cinematography was stunning, about 3 generations of women who are stuck living in the deserts of Argentina (?) and how they try to escape back to civilization. It is truly beautiful, but I cannot for the life of me remember what the name of it is. (Probably because I don't speak Spanish)
I also like the New Zealand film, "Eagle Vs. Shark."
And of course Curse of the Golden Flower, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Memoirs of a Geisha and those type of films. Can anyone reccommend any more? I really like the beauty of the locations and the vastness of the landscape. The way those films are shot and presented are astounding.
A couple or real eye-openers aren't they? Very well done.
Both take place in Rio and paint a very realistic picture of the enormity of the poverty and crime that is everyday life for so many millions of people.
Just watched City of Men yesterday, a tale of friendship and survival in a city where the greatest challenge is growing up.
I like in the end of each, that the director shows a glimmer of hope in an overwhelming and suppressed third world country situation. That there is a chance for change somewhere in the future.

If you guys/gals have a chance, watch this movie. I can't believe it is online. It is "Ran" by Akira Kurosawa. It does have subtitles, so some of you might hate this. Don't worry, it is not a martial arts film with kicking, screaming, etc. It is about a warlord who gives up his throne to his 3 sons to take over. It is based on William Shakespeare's "King Lear"
I just saw another very powerful movie Voces Inocentes (2004) Innocent Voices. The story about a little boy and his life in El Salvador during the war. Highly recommend. Get your Kleenex out!
