This was one of the better movies I've seen in quite a while. I always love survival movies like this, where you have only a few actors and very little dialogue -- think Tom Hanks in "Cast Away." You really get to see what an actor is made of in situations like that. And IMO, Will Smith did an AMAZING job. Oscar-worthy performance, in my opinion. I'd never even been a Will Smith fan before this movie, but now I am. When he's with his dog in the lab, and all you see is the close-up expression on Will's face (if you've seen it, you know the scene I'm talking about) ... that was seriously moving stuff. You could feel his emotion coming right through the screen.
My only complaint is that the ending did seem a little bit rushed, but that's about it. The storyline was convincing, the dark seekers were scary without being gory, there was a lot of suspense, and it left you with lots of philosophical questions to ponder, from religion to the limits of modern medicine.
SLIGHT SPOILER: To the poster who wondered about how the woman got to NYC with the bridges out, I think she mentioned getting there in a Red Cross boat that she'd found.

No, she was on a Red Cross refugee ship when the virus spread across the mainland. The virus came aboard when they stopped to take on supplies. Of the entire ship's population, only she and her son were immune.
I don't think she ever said how she got on/off the island.

Oh, yeah, you're right. Thanks for jogging my memory. I guess she must have gone swimming.

I just saw this today. I loved the first 3/4 of it. I think they could have made it longer and made a much better ending after developing the characters a bit more. It seemed a bit rushed to me at the end.
I went to see this movie a second time mostly because one of my sons wanted to see it since his brother and I had already seen it. I think I am in total agreement with your opinion of the movie. It should have been longer and had a better ending. I think I liked the movie, but something was missing.
I enjoyed the film right up until the part where the woman and the little boy showed up. The scene where the dog went into the dark warehouse was so intense! It was heartbreaking when he had to kill the dog. They could have done so much more with the story after this point. Ok here's my wish list for the film:
That they would have used real actors for the Dark seekers
That they would have delved more into the backstory of HOW the virus actually spread and what happened to the idiot doctor that created it. Get into what exactly about the cure mutated the Dark seekers. Show society in its last days as Will tried to work on a cure.
That they would have gotten into the fact that the scanners were actually mis-scanning people. Remember when he made them scan his wife again and the results were different? That had to have happened to others.
That they would have explored Will's descension(sp?) into madness a little more.
That they would have chilled out with the product placement.
Overall, the film was good for what it was but it just seemed, incomplete ya know? After reading the synopsis of the book though, I must read the book. The movie took a completely different turn. The bacon scene was hilarious though.
This is a remake of Charlton Hestons "Omega man", if you saw that, you know the main idea line. When I was very young I saw it,( I think it was about a thousand years ago ,) and much ado in the news because Heston kissed a black woman- ooooooooo Shows just how long ago it was.
Which in turn was a remake of the the Vincent Price movie "Last Man on Earth" (I think it was called), which in turn was based on a book from the 50's named "I am Legend".
Heston is The Man however, no one can say "oh my GOD" like one-liner exclamations like he can, as in "you Damn Dirty APE". Can't compare him to the Fresh Prince.
Likewise the trap that the male DS set for Will, the organized combat, and their ability to understand Will's radio broadcasts and come to the dock looking for him.
one school of thought was that the "trap" was actually one of Will's own traps that he set out before, but he forgot about. Essentially he got caught in his own trap. Never really explained in the movie and they didn't pursue that plot line further, unfortunetly. Yeah they could have added an hour to it to make it a really great movie.
All reviews are saying that "CRAPPOLA FEST" of Will Smith's new movie. The author mentioned that aspects of his book were done many times over.
I preferred the "Omega Man".... anybody just love Charlton Heston screaming "soylent green is people!"
