Now, why they went bankrupt is a more interesting topic. Most analysts will tell you they failed to adapt with the times. Interestingly, they had the opportunity many years ago to buy Netflix and turned it down.

Actually, they were bought by Dish Network. The issue is DVD rental is now passe. Netflix (delivery) and Redbox is the closest thing to that. Streaming Netflix has also hurt Blockbuster as well.
used to be people had to go out to the video store to get a movie to watch at home while vegging out on the sofa. Nowadays they don't even have to go out to bum out at home
Because people are, first, getting so lazy that they don't want to be bothered going to the store, and, second, they're being persuaded that it's unpleasant to have to interact with people in real life.
There was a passing comment on NPR that going to a video store used to actually be fun.
